Curriculum
Five Years
Eligibility:
- completion of a pre-kindergarten program or comparable school experience
- adequate English language ability
- a foreign passport
- ineligible for TAS because of parental passport classification
- child must be ineligible for a local kindergarten program
- turns age 5 after Nov. 1 (if heading for TAS)
- turns age 6 after Sept. 1 (if heading for Chinese Primary School)
The Interim Kindergarten (IK) program at Child's World is not a substitute for a kindergarten program. It is not designed for children who are eligible for kindergarten at other English
speaking schools.
Purpose:
IK is a developmentally appropriate, language-based program that addresses all aspects of the child: social/emotional, physical, and academic. The curriculum focuses on language
development through multiple language experiences (exploration of drama, show and tell, music, etc.). An introduction to pre-reading and writing skills through phonemic awareness is included. The
goal of IK is to promote a positive attitude to school, social responsibility, readiness for elementary school, and a love of learning.
During Sharing Time the child learns to:
- listen carefully

- respect the rights and property of others
- develop basic communication skills
During Work Time the child learns to:
- follow directions
- complete task
- work independently
- recognize the alphabet
- develop phonetic awareness
- begin to write letters legibly
- develop creativity
- writing journal
- appreciate the written word as valuable
- identify directions and opposites
- explore sequencing and patterning
- stimulate the imagination
During Story Time the child learns to:
- listen attentively to many kinds of literature, stories, poems, plays
- ask relevant questions about characters and plots
- re-tell the story in the child's own words
- use drama to promote oral skills
- develop a love of books and reading
During Music Time the child learns to:
- develop memory skills by learning new songs and rhythm patterns
- play a variety of musical instruments
- improve motor skills through dance
- express feelings with music & movement
During Physical Activity the child learns to:
- develop more control of body movements
- increase strength and flexibility
- improve eye-hand coordination
- develop proper posture
- learn games and fair play
- build self-confidence
During Play Time the child learns to:
- get along successfully with others
- maintain self-control
- develop a sense of fairness & trust
- use language to settle conflicts
- promote cooperation
During Exploration the child learns to:
- enjoy a wide variety of experiences which promote active participation
- basics of cooking
- basics of gardening
During Science the child learns to:
- explore the five senses
- study nutrition & learn how to keep the body healthy
- observe the world around us & study the living things that inhabit it
- study life cycles
- recognize endangered animals & habitats
- study space & our solar system
During Math the child learns to:
- use manipulatives to explore concrete math concepts
- create patterns using tangrams, etc.
- recognize sets, sequences, patterns
- measure, classify , problem-solve
- identify numerals from 1 - 100
- count forward to 100
- if ready: write numerals 1 - 50
- solve simple addition/subtraction
