Child's World
Curriculum
The placing of a child in these stages is based on his/her ability to read, regardless of age. Those who wish to join the program after it has started will be re-grouped in the appropriate level unless he/she is able to catch up with the other children who had started from the very beginning.
Stage 1:
This stage is tailored for children who know some letter sounds, recognize names and words in a text and able to use the illustrations to tell a story.
Stage 2:
This stage is meant for beginning and developing readers. Beginning readers are children who read books with word patterns, re-tell main ideas of text, make predictions, and take risks in reading.
Stage 3 & 4:
Developing readers are children who rely on print more than illustrations, re-tell beginning, middle and end and read with fluency.
The "Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme" will be used in the program. The Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme uses the most frequently met words in the English Language - KEY WORDS - as a
starting point for learning to read successfully and confidently. With this essential vocabulary established, children are able to tackle more complicated reading.
Once introduced, words are repeated in a variety of ways to help word recognition. New vocabulary is introduced alongside established vocabulary. Each book has a separate list of the new words
introduced which can be used as a checklist or to practice words out of context.
The following is a tentative schedule for the reading program. However, changes may be made when the need arises.
Extended English Program
Child's World offers an Extended English Program. This class is available to all children who study Taiwan local elemary school (age 6-12).
Class Hours:
The Extended English Program is offered to children who have completed the Kindergarten Program at Child's World. The curriculum continues from their current educational level. The program is one of interactive learning - students are continually engaged in classroom conversation. Lessons continue to expand vocabulary while language activities increase comprehension and develop sentence complexity. The teacher creates situations in which students are encouraged to communicate in a low anxiety environment. Error correction is made indirectly through modelling. A cooperative learning approach is used with drama, poetry and role-play. The class includes reading and writing at the grade level.
